Moral Values and Student Perceptions of the Middle East: Observations on Student Learning from an Online Dialog
Unformatted Document Text:  2 Abstract Today’s students are inheriting a world very different from the one their parents knew, and they must adapt to a new reality of international political relations. In response to environmental degradation, disease, globalization, terrorism, and the erosion of sovereignty, political science teachers must help their students learn about new policy concerns, communication capabilities, issues and cultures. Recent advances in the disciplines of political science and information technology as well as an understanding of student attitude change make this adaptation in teaching and learning possible. This article explores the relationship between moral reflections of Judaism and Islam and student attitudes toward political entities involved in Middle East conflict, Israel and Arab states. Students learn about these positions using an interactive, internet dialog between Jewish and Muslim scholars who discuss issues of suicide-homicide bombing, resistance to occupation, the US role in the Middle East, and the future shape of peace. After surveying an extensive literature on student attitude change, the author presents the study’s methodology as well its quantitative and qualitative findings. These suggest that students’ views of political entities are influenced by moral reasoning in justification of their actions, and that internet activity plays a role in learning and attitude change. Abstract

Today’s students are inheriting a world very different from the one their parents knew,
and they must adapt to a new reality of international political relations. In response to
environmental degradation, disease, globalization, terrorism, and the erosion of
sovereignty, political science teachers must help their students learn about new policy
concerns, communication capabilities, issues and cultures. Recent advances in the
disciplines of political science and information technology as well as an understanding of
student attitude change make this adaptation in teaching and learning possible.

This article explores the relationship between moral reflections of Judaism and Islam and
student attitudes toward political entities involved in Middle East conflict, Israel and
Arab states. Students learn about these positions using an interactive, internet dialog
between Jewish and Muslim scholars who discuss issues of suicide-homicide bombing,
resistance to occupation, the US role in the Middle East, and the future shape of peace.
After surveying an extensive literature on student attitude change, the author presents the
study’s methodology as well its quantitative and qualitative findings. These suggest that
students’ views of political entities are influenced by moral reasoning in justification of
their actions, and that internet activity plays a role in learning and attitude change.
