Abstract:

SUNY Cortland is committed to creating learning communities to enhance the first year experience of students who have not declared majors. The college is also interested in increasing student involvement in both community service and American political life. A group of Arts and Sciences faculty designed the Living Democracy Service Learning Community as part of these efforts. In this presentation I will share the problems and solutions that arose as we integrated the goals of faculty teaching introductory courses in political science, philosophy, history, and composition with broader community goals of teaching the connections between community service and democratic participation. Among the topics that I will discuss are conflicts in teaching philosophy, learning to use overlaps in topic areas, and creating assignments that use the community service component of the community.

I will also present data we used to evaluate the learning outcomes of our students. We used a pre-test post-test model to determine the extent to which participation in the community influenced student understanding of democracy, participation, and connections between community service/community needs and political participation.
