Abstract:

This paper reports the results of a pilot program implemented at Southern Illinois University. Seeking to increase the number of students who are both socially conscious scholars and critically thinking participants in civic life, we developed a pilot course that integrates service-learning projects into a large introductory course on American politics and government. This course includes two innovations that should serve as models for other courses. First, we developed an organizational structure for large lecture courses. By developing clear lines of communication and appropriate incentive structures, we provided focused service-learning experiences for students. Second, the service learning teams are innovative in that they are “research-as-service” groups that are designed to bring expertise to community groups. The pilot program encourages students to be brokers between the university and the community. Eight student teams were assigned research-as-service projects in which students will tackle a significant public problem by helping community groups gather information and provide a solution. The resulting was greater student understanding of the U.S. political system and much needed research assistance for community groups. I evaluate the pilot program using interviews with the community group leaders, focus groups, quantitative and qualitative assessments by students, and a pre/post test of student knowledge. I conclude with recommendations for other scholars seeking to create research-as-service programs or to integrate service learning experiences into large lecture courses. |

| RESEARCH-AS-SERVICE PROJECTS IN LARGE LECTURE COURSES J. TOBIN GRANT DEPARTMENT OF POLITICAL SCIENCE SOUTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY Abstract A research-as-service project is a service learning approach that has the potential to help undergraduate students learn to do political science. I evaluate a pilot program that integrated a research-as-service project into a large introductory course on American politics. This program had mixed results.
