Unformatted Document Text:  58 lend themselves better to this type of study, you will work with Steve to select the time and place. (Interdisciplinary possibilities abound.) 3. A ballet production by the Ballet Russe: We have studied the Rite of Spring in class, however the Ballet Russe premiered many other wonderful ballets. Select a ballet, place it in context, and provide an analysis of a section of the music. Possibilities include Stravinsky’s Firebird (which we studied in class), Petrushka, plus works by Debussy (who wrote the Sunken Cathedral) and others. The next two options coordinate nicely with the first two choices in the Art topics listed above. You can focus on music alone or make some additional connections with Art: 4. Primitivism: From its birth with the Rite of Spring in 1913, Primitivism was an important musical style in the twentieth century. Choose a work from the period and examine its structure and context. Suggested works are Stravinsky’s Les Noce (a Russian folk-wedding where the guests become increasingly intoxicated) and the music of Bela Bartok and Prokofiev. 5. The Machine Age: Like the visual artist, composers were fascinated with machines. Edgar Varese uses percussion and electronic music to approach mechanized sound and George Antheil (who we will discuss later in the semester) even writes and Airplane Sonata. 6. Influence of Folk Music on Classical Music: Nationalism played an important role in music, particularly in oppressed countries. Many composers also cultivated folk music for its exotic quality. Bela Bartok, a Hungarian composer, is the most famous for his incorporation of Hungarian and Romanian melodies. (Politics and Art). 7. Piano Sonata, January 10 th , 1905: On 1/10/05 a worker was killed by police during a protest for a new Czech university. Leos Janacek, the most important Czech composer of the century, was deeply stirred by this event and wrote a piano sonata in honor of the slain worker. Study the political situation during Janacek’s time and show how he uses music to evoke the feelings surrounding the event. 8. Frank Bridge, a British composer, wrote several works in response to World War I. One deals with the loss of a 9-year old child during the sinking of the Lusitania; the other works (piano sonata, cello concerto) is his personal response to the war. 9. Berlin in the 1930s was a remarkable center for the arts up until Hitler curshed the movement. Kurt Weil, Arnold Schoeberg, Alban Berg, and many others wrote many of their greatest works during this time. Select a particular composition and tie it to the sentiment, philosophy, and culture of the time. 10. Any musicians grab your curiosity in Before the Deluge or Rites of Spring? Pick one and dig deeper into his or her work.
