Abstract:

Benefits of an international internship are numerous. Students are placed in situations where exposure to foreign cultures and governments often challenge the student’s understanding of the world. In addition, students face research and writing duties that differ dramatically from those they face in their home university classroom, thus giving them the opportunity to hone and expand their skills as a scholar. Finally, students interning abroad have unique access to primary sources that can add another dimension to their research and writing experience. Unfortunately, many students who intern abroad report that although they enjoyed their internship and were involved in a number of interesting and challenging short-term research projects, they lacked the know-how and guidance to work through the process of developing and seeing a substantive research project through to conclusion. This results in part from the difficulties that arise when professors attempt to mentor students who they do not see for the period of the internship and who they only have contact with through email. In our presentation, we discuss specific practices we have implemented in our Scottish Parliament internship program to improve the mentoring relationship with students. Those who attend this presentation will come away with a better understanding of the ways in which professors can prepare for and play a long-distance mentoring role that promotes a more substantive research experience for the students they work with.
