Abstract:

As two faculty in a small Political Science Department at a Jesuit university, the mission of which calls us to foster a sense of civic responsibility and civic leadership in our students and our community, these authors have developed different strategies to connect the academic study of political science with the practice of politics. Organizations such as the Campaign for Young Voters have documented that people under the age of 30 tend to be the least politically engaged and active of any demographic cohort in the United States. For those of us who teach politics, this fact is difficult to understand, as our love for politics is most often the root of our vocations as educators in this discipline; further, our understanding of politics has compelled many of us to be politically active and engaged citizens. This paper will examine the challenges that many of us face in moving our students from mere political understanding to political engagement. First, it will provide a brief overview of the literature of political efficacy, experiential learning, and civic engagement to inform a discussion about the connection between academic study and practical application. Second, the paper will examine the unique pedagogical innovations used by these authors, in a range of political science classes (within both the American Government and International Relations subfield), to increase students’ sense of political efficacy. The long term objective of such techniques is to empower students to be politically active locally, nationally, and/or internationally.
