Abstract:
|
For over two years, Washington was engulfed by two scandals involving a prominent politician and an intern. In each instance, the news focused on the details of an intimate relationship. In each case, however, there is also an important contextual story that involves educational planning and administration. In particular, this other story involves Washington internship programs that set and maintain standards of student conduct and in the process create opportunities for a fruitful educational experience or a personal nightmare.
This paper both identifies best practices in Washington internship programs and evaluates, on the basis of these practices, the internship programs in which Monica Lewinsky and Chandra Levy were enrolled. The operations of these programs are reconstructed via press reports, available public documents, grand jury testimony, and through interviews with student participants.
This paper concludes by reviewing underlying societal and educational values that both explain the operation of these two internship programs and also make difficult alternative models of operation. |
