In other words, are there any differences between the lives of female F2s and male F2s? Method Research Site The online bulletin board started in 1998 as a place where Chinese students at American universities could post questions about how to write computer programs -- and talk about Chinese politics without fearing a government crackdown. It has since evolved into a virtual family-counseling service for the increasing numbers of Chinese immigrants who are trying to navigate a very different life in the United States. An estimated 300,000 users, most of whom are college educated, visit the site every month (Li, 2004). There are 246 specified small discussion boards. The boards discuss diverse topics, such as current events in China, shopping, family, automobile, humor, movies, love, sports, job search, and history etc. The Unknown Space has 30,757 registered members. It is an open forum. People can access the community anonymously. However, only registered members have the right to post messages. The members of the Unknown Space basically are Chinese who live abroad. Most of them are Chinese students and scholars who study and work abroad. Caught between two cultures, the members of the Unknown Space often find that they get the best advice on adapting to the U.S. life from each other (Li, 2004).
