As a result, the DOH plans to increase the number of HIV tests on foreign brides as well as women seeking abortions, who, the DOH says, run a higher risk of infection. 2 Introduction The association of foreigners and disease, and the derogation of immigrants as low-quality groups have been the most disastrous experiences of those newcomers in North American and Western European societies since the eighteenth century. In this decade, Taiwan, with its new role of becoming a receiving country in a noticeable intra-Asia migration trend and its semi-peripheral position in the world system, is duplicating the similar, negative images for its new arrivals—the cause or source of a variety of physical and societal ills. Introduction
The association of foreigners and disease, and the derogation of immigrants as low-quality
