Abstract:

In this paper, I will use Taiwan as an example to analyze how a state’s migrant labor policies (re)construct the gender and racial division of labor in the context of globalization. Specifically, I have focused upon the ideologies behind state migrant labor policies and how they impact upon migrant workers’ experiences. I have also analyzed state policies and media reports on migrant workers to reveal the institutional violence and map the ruling relations between the state, society and individuals. Based on my analysis and the migrant workers’ experiences in Taiwan, the discourse of globalization is represented in an alternative way by creating the global gender and racial division of labor as well as contributing to the inequalities at the intersections of gender, race and class.
