A Descriptive Analysis of Terrorism in South Africa

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Get this Document | Similar Titles

Abstract:

Terrorist activity in South Africa has decreased significantly, after peaking during the 1990’s. The role that terrorism played in this country’s struggle for democracy demonstrates the controversy and the complexity surrounding the distinction between “terrorist” and “freedom fighter.” These labels have dramatic implications for the groups to whom they are applied. In this presentation, we report the results of a descriptive analysis of terrorist events as a first step toward understanding how groups in South Africa used political violence to advance their causes and what events led the groups to desist from terrorist activity.
