Combining the Best of Both Worlds: Discerning and Ensuring Quality in an Alternative Certification Program
| |
| | Unformatted Document Text:
Presently, the New York City Teaching Fellows is in its fifth year of operation. Originally, the first year consisted of only elementary education Fellows. We now have middle and secondary Fellows as well. Our preliminary results indicate that our retention rate is higher in the elementary program compared with the middle and secondary program. Fellows have reported that they find our mentoring program to be particularly useful, given the difficulty of the first few years of teaching. Our results also indicate that the Fellows have scored equal to or higher than our usual mainstream graduate students on teacher certification tests.
Section II: Outcomes and Methods
A. Learner/Participant Outcomes
Participants will be invited to ask questions. In addition, they will be asked to offer further critique of the information provided. Opportunities will be provided for participants to share information on the topic.
B. Methods
The presenters will provide the audience with handouts that outline the collaborative processes at Lehman, which include selection of applicants, organization of the summer program, course requirements, graduate school requirements, summer school teaching, fall placement and mentoring. The audience will have opportunities to ask questions and share their own experiences with educating new teachers.
The session will begin with a presentation that provides an overview and profile of the New York City Teaching Fellows Lehman College experience and a description of the approach used to sustain these teachers during their degree program and beyond.
The first presenter will describe in detail how the program has developed since its inception in June 2000 to the present. The second presenter will describe in detail the efforts the college and the schools take to insure that the Fellows continue in the field of education after the completion of their degree. Each presenter will provide samples of the admission process, course syllabi, student work, and mentoring procedures.
