Abstract:

A new vision for teacher education must be integrated, because of the increasing demands on the classroom teacher and also because we know that our world is understood and experienced in an integrated fashion. We say we believe in the whole child but our teaching does not reflect this idea, with the shrinking of the arts in our schools. Arts that do occur are usually only music and visual arts and are under the advocacy of specialists. In this way classroom teachers and schools unwittingly support the idea that the arts are not for everyone- they are only for the select few who have “talent” and/or access. Most of the work in arts integration has come from the arts world. This can only go so far, as systemic change must be internalized and personally driven by classroom teachers. In this presentation an artist, a teacher educator and several preservice and inservice teachers describe their journey in helping to create a new aesthetic that uses the arts to teach content and supports the teaching of the arts themselves by classroom teachers (without requiring special equipment or in depth specialized knowledge or “talent”). In addition, we show how the arts support standards, provide a powerful assessment tool, are a great equalizer for special education and other diverse students, and serves as a learning tool for elements of guidance and overall community. The presentation is based on a required course in arts integration that is now in its fifth semester of existence. The overall premise is presented, along with concrete experiences, and pre and post testing on the teachers.
