Abstract
Current scholarship has noted the gay movement is characterized by depoliticization in
contemporary mainland China. A hard line the government taking on political issue
together with Chinese culture’s insensitivity to homosexuality and homo/hetero duality
explains the use of this strategy in local gay movement. Although the earlier assertion is
still largely valid, the findings from my fieldwork on CGCCO (Chengdu Gay Community
Care Organization), the most successful local gay organization in China, have
complicated our understanding of the depoliticization strategy. In contrast to its low
profile in political issues, CGCCO takes a totally different approach to sexuality matters
by promoting liberal, even radical, sexual values. This strategy has become very
successful in enhancing the self-images of the gay population as well as mobilizing the
local gay community and counteract the depoliticization imposed by the authoritarian
state.
