Effective Teacher Study
Unformatted Document Text:  Dr. Batcho’s classes were structured very well. They included lecture and discussion but one did not dominate the other. She planned very well to allow discussion to envelope the class when it was thought provoking and related to the topic. Also, her tests were very flexible in design; this allowed her to go with the flow of discussion even more because she did not have to teach to a test. I think this is something I would ideally like to adopt for myself as a teacher, though it is far more difficult in high school setting with standardized testing. Also she was always prepared with hi-tech instructional material before class. She would come in early and cue video to the correct spot and music was set up accordingly. This reduced the time wasted setting up equipment during class. She always had feedback for a student no more than two classes after an exam and always came prepared with the proper paperwork. Her ability to motivate me was outstanding, I became very interested in a topic she had discussed in my cognition class and asked her for more information. She referred me to a short novel called Lying Awake by Mark Salzman. After reading this novel about a nun that experiences religious vision that doctors attribute to epilepsy, I had several interesting ideas that I discussed with Dr. Batcho. She encouraged me to write a paper for extra credit on concepts from the novel. I have never gone out of my way to write an extra credit paper for a class that I was doing well in. Through her instruction and later her motivation it encouraged me to go above and beyond, the novel was amazing and the paper truly made me reflect on a topic that I feel hits close to home. I have never been more satisfied with myself than after completing that extra credit assignment. It was my first hint that academic papers can be interesting and reflect personality at the same time; it is all about one’s level of involvement with the subject matter. This is a very important motivating lesson courtesy of Dr. Batcho.
