Unformatted Document Text:  Mid-Career professionals Join LEAPS: Professional Transformation in an Urban School Focus: The poster will describe the development and implementation of a newly created alternate route into teaching that combines rigorous academic course work with a nine month on-site intensive experience in LEAP. Background and educational context: Many states, in an effort to attract and retain highly qualified individuals for schools that serve diverse populations, have enacted legislation that allows such individuals to move into classrooms with limited pedagogical preparation. In Indiana, State Legislative bill 165, passed in May, 2001, requires each institution offering teacher education programs to offer a Transition to Teaching program (TTT)> The TTT Program-Secondary Education at our institution results from a collaboration among several colleges on our campus as well as an alliance with an urban high school. The TTT Program recognizes the complexity of the task of learning to teach. As such, it is an intensive campus and field-based program designed to prepare teachers through classroom observations, small group tutoring of high school students, extensive guided practice experiences as well as through bi-weekly seminars during which students discuss assigned readings. Students are encouraged to connect their readings with their classroom and service experiences. They also learn habits of reflection and ways to question and challenge their beliefs and assumptions about teaching learning, students and the contexts in which teaching and learning interactions occur. Now in its third year of implementation, the program has prepared a small number of teachers who are equipped to work with diverse students, who know how to monitor student progress and behavior, who have a solid knowledge based, and who assess student learning using a variety of assessment tools. The unique feature of the program is the particular nature of the partnership with the urban high school.
