Reconceptualizing Leadership Preparation Programs: An Innovative Model
Unformatted Document Text:  program policies and practices, and school district principal selection practices. With regards to exemplary instructional practices, educational leaders are being prepared through university/school district partnerships that foster clinical field experiences, broad-based instruction, action research, and support services for emergent and practicing school leaders. Successful school leaders and business executives are teamed with aspiring principals to deliver an intense and inspiring program with one goal in mind: to ensure all schools are lead by highly qualified principals. Over the past two years, thirty-six individuals have completed the program and twenty-eight of those individuals have acquired principalships in some of the school district’s most challenging schools. The remaining eight individuals have been placed in the district’s selection pool and will be given consideration for placement once a school becomes available that is a match with their skills and attributes. Implications for Action This unique program, a joint venture between the university, state department of education, local school districts, and the business community, is paving the way to providing every public school with an exceptional leader—a leader who builds capacity for change sufficient to face critical challenges posed by an ever changing society. Research results acquired from an assessment of program design and implementation can be used to inform changes in state licensure policies and practices. In addition, university preparation programs might use research results to inform changes in their traditional leadership preparation programs. Learner/Participant Outcomes During the presentation, presenters will explain each component of the program, highlight the results of focus group assessments, discuss participant placement, and expound on the performance of practicing school leaders who have successfully completed the program. Major benefits to be acquired by session attendees include knowledge of the innovative model, processes and procedures that can be used to establish partnerships between universities and school districts, and strategies for implementing innovative approaches to school leadership preparation. Methods: Session Design The presentation will be delivered by three individuals—one from the university, one from the school district, and a former program participant. Session objectives will be achieved through a panel presentation via electronics, handouts, and engaged dialogue between presenters and session attendees.
