Abstract:In the current age of globalization, ‘civilizations’ or ‘cultural traditions’ can hardly distinguished from each other. The result is not a homogenization of culture but a diffusion of cultural differences by processes of migration, media communication, imperialism, and free market economies. Arab or Muslim culture, for instance, is being produced today in places like Paris, London, Berlin, New York, Houston and, of course, in what is called the ‘Arab’ and ‘Muslim World’. For this reason, political scientists must discuss methodologies and theories with view to the processes of cultural translation in a modern and globalized society.
This paper uses the concepts of ‘diaspora’ and ‘translation practices’ as they were laid out by Brent Hayes Edwards in “The Practice of Diaspora”. By looking at the bi-lingual magazine Al-Hewâr (The Dialogue) this paper takes the Arab-American and Muslim American diasporas as an example. It argues that the main challenge for these two communities is to maintain a distinct identity while connecting the communities to their wider social environments in the United States and in the homelands of the Arab and Muslim world. The choice of language (English and/or Arabic), the establishment of community media, and the concept of ‘dialogue’ play a key role for reaching this goal. Within this framework, the paper analyzes how the three concepts of Islam, ‘Arabism’ and American society are discussed and related to each other in Al-Hewâr from its foundation in 1989 until today.
