Abstract:
|
This paper addresses two issues. First, why is it that so many critics of white supremacy turn to prophetic forms of speech? Second, by examining Toni Morrison's specific references to prophecy in notable non-fictin writing, I explore how she understands her role as a novelist and writer and distinguishes herself from James Baldwin. |

| “Race and Prophecy” George Shulman/New York University APSA Annual Conference September 05 It seems impossible to think about the politics of race in the United States without being compelled toward prophecy as a form of political theory and practice. I mean this less as a statement of historical fact though it is and more as an invitation to pursue the idea that an elective affinity joins anti-racism prophetic language and political contestation. Since liberalism is constituted by disavowing its |
| Partly by memory of history: uprooting enslavement and subjugation are cast as a traumatic legacy whose narration and overcoming define a constitutive collective project. In response I would ask: Is Morrison’s aesthetic and therapeutic project a symptom of political disappointment and a displacement of politics into culture? A necessarily cultural politics in a world increasingly post-national? In either case isn’t it but a step from Hosea whose forgiving God says “I will call them my beloved who were not |
