And Axis of Eve enlivens anti-Republican protests by flashing and
selling panties marked with double-entendres such as “Expose Bush,” “Lick
Bush,” and “My Cherry for Kerry.”
The Eves call their action program
“Operation Naked Democracy.” They organize “ Panty Ware Parties,” a
parody of Tupperware parties. These parties are intended to foment
criticism of right-wing administrations and political discussions among
women. “ Like protest panties, PantyWare Parties are a form of parody that
opens up space for serious discussion of our exclusion from the political
sphere.” The Eves encourage women to vote for the Democratic Party, a far
more mainstream activity than flashing panties. In 2004, they had a
campaign “to redress the extreme disenfranchisement which occurred
disproportionately in the Florida Black community in 2000 and 2002.”
According to their own anonymously written account, an Axis of Eve
founder had
been searching for ways to combine activism and creativity, and knew
the value of humor as a form of sustenance in bleak times….[W]e are
using our bodies as a political platform, flashing protest panties…to
send political postcards and get a message across….As feminists, we
are keenly aware of the many meanings (and dangers) associated with
body politics. Yet we believe that the Bush administration's perverse
