Abstract:

A variety of trust, called "universal trust" is shown to have a significant impact in mediating people's willingness to continue funding the welfare state, despite increases in immigration induced diversity. Assuming that trust is a "trait" rather than a "state", universal trust has a positive impact on support for the welfare state, while "primoridal trust", or trust towards people who are "like themselves" tends to be associated with decrease in support for the welfare state. Support for the welfare state is measured in terms of public's attitudes towards "cheating on taxes" and "bribery". This study shows that immigration induced diversity does not necessarily have to lead to a decline of public support for the welfare state leading to an "Americanization "of the European Welfare state.
