Conclusion
I have argued that important principles that underlie liberal democracy stand in
considerable tension when it comes to the issue of how the state should treat intimate
relationships among adults. While the state cannot completely eliminate this tension, in
my view, it can and should adopt an approach that harmonizes them as far as possible and
seeks to give each of these principles significant respect. This gives the state a role,
albeit a limited role, in supporting relationships among adults.
