trade-offs: helping the poorest regardless of race risks reifying persistent racial hierarchy, and
celebrating the right of individuals to embrace their own heritage – or none at all-- risks naiveté
or social snobbery. As the ancient (apocryphal?) Chinese curse has it, “May you live in
interesting times.” We do.
