Abstract:

Young adults are turning away from news about politics and public affairs. The News for a New Generation Project, funded by the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement, has been investigating whether there are formats for news that would be both more engaging and informative for young adults than those that are currently available. This paper reports results of an experiment that compares positive evaluations of and learning from four different news Websites. Results indicate that Websites featuring a youth design and stories framed for a youth audience elicit the most positive responses from subjects, but subjects learn the most from a site with a standard design and traditional text.
