Race and the Grim Arithmetic: Shelby Foote on the Causes of the Civil War

In this sense, perhaps, Foote’s history makes possible a kind of love of America. But what one learns wisdom about is not the great drama of justice done by a loving providence who makes meaningful use of a virtuous people. One sees qualities of virtue and vice, operating in different measure in every individual, as those individuals find themselves in the grip of a terrible force that no one is able ultimately either to understand or control.
