Abstract:

This paper presents three inter-related arguments. First, I argue that the Bush administration's grand strategy is rooted in a worldview and set of principled beliefs that have along tradition in American foreign policy. This view, which some have labeled democratic realism posits that the world is extremely dangerous; it is fillied with hostile forces that are antithetical to demomcracy and only the firm and active projection of American power can ensure and protect global stability. Second, I argue that while these ideas have a long tradition in American foreign policy thought and discourse, these views have gained significant influence only in four periods -- each immediately following dramatic events that produced periods of intense national trauma.
