Analyzing Letters to the Editor in North Carolina Newspapers
Abstract Each day, thousands of letters to the editor appear in America’s newspapers. However, we know very little about the content and purpose of these letters. This study represents a preliminary examination of letters to the editor in the largest newspapers in the Tarheel state. After coding more than 600 letters, we find that letters to the editor do not seem to reflect the opinions of “regular Americans,” but rather show systematic biases. Women write fewer letters to the editor than men. Further, women tend to write different types of letters than men. We also find some evidence that different types of newspapers print different types of letters.
