There has been a growing awareness of the use of the web by terrorists both as a tool for communication amongst themselves but also as a tool to communicate their message to others, enemies, supporters and potential supporters. Many posit that one of the key goals of terror is to demand attention. In a sense terrorism can be viewed as violent advertising for a cause. The world wide web creates a new media platform where terrorists’ messages can be spread. We posit that groups using violence to spread their message will be interested in increasing the amount of cyberspace focusing on them and thus either directly or indirectly on their message. We hypothesize that violence is an effective way of building up a larger web space devoted to ones cause. Specifically we test the relationship of the number of fatalities caused by terrorist groups and the number of websites that deal with the groups while controlling for the level of internet usage by target countries.
Paper presented at the annual meeting of the American Political Science Association.
