IR Theory's Impending Rendezvous With Nietzsche

While various IR scholars have drawn explicitly from their early modern theoretical predecessors, at the same time many of the most important steps in the development of IR theory have been taken without reference to the earlier political theories that they appear to mimic. Thus, not only are the connections between individual IR theories and early modern political theories left unexplored, but so too the similarity between the overall trajectories of two discourses remains unrecognized. This article, therefore, highlights key similarities between the development of contemporary IR theory and early modern political thought, and does so by utilizing an analytical perspective that is informed by the work of Leo Strauss. Such a perspective allows for not simply a comparison of discourses, but also a general critique of IR theorizing.

Abstract
In the context of IR studies, the connection between IR theory and modern
political philosophy is both well established and under-appreciated. While various IR
scholars have drawn explicitly from their early modern theoretical predecessors, at the
same time many of the most important steps in the development of IR theory have been
taken without reference to the earlier political theories that they appear to mimic. Thus,
not only are the connections between individual IR theories and early modern political
theories left unexplored, but so too the similarity between the overall trajectories of two
discourses remains unrecognized. This article, therefore, highlights key similarities
between the development of contemporary IR theory and early modern political thought,
and does so by utilizing an analytical perspective that is informed by the work of Leo
Strauss. Such a perspective allows for not simply a comparison of discourses, but also a
general critique of IR theorizing.
