Abstract:
|
Despite continuing technological progress, average state size started declining in the late 19th century after centuries of growth. Offering an explanation referring to the geopolitical consequences of nationalism, this paper rephrases the empirical puzzle as a parameter shift in log-normal distributions. In order to explore the net effect of national self-determination on state sizes, I introduce a computational model of state formation that generates realistic state-size distributions. Nested inside this framework is an exogenously imposed set of mechanisms of national identity-formation that triggers geopolitical transformations including national unification, secession, and irredentism. It is shown that this addition suffices to produce shrinking war sizes while retaining realistic distributional shapes. |
