Southern Residence (+)
1 = South. 0 = Non-South. Southern states include Alabama,
Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi,
North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and
West Virginia.
Political Ideology (+)
"Do you think of yourself as more like a liberal or more like a
conservative?" 1 = conservative, 2 = neither, refuses to choose, 3 =
liberal.
Labor Union (+)
“Do you or anyone else in this household belong to a labor union?”
1 = yes, 0 = no.
Party Competence Variables “For each of the following issues, please tell me which party you
think would do a better job of...” (1) handling the Nation’s
economy, (2) handling foreign affairs, (3) making health care more
affordable, (4) improving race relations, (5) reforming the welfare
system, (6) handling the problem of poverty, (7) handling the
budget deficit. -1 = Republicans, 0 = no difference, neither party, 1
= Democrats. (8) “Which party is most likely to cut Social Security
benefits...” and (9) “Which party is most likely to raise taxes...” -1
= Republicans, 0 = not much difference, 1 = Democrats.
