Appendix 1: Text of Survey of Presidential Candidate Issue Positions in 2000 Election
“I would like to request your assistance in a study of the effects of different forms of
media exposure on knowledge of presidential candidates’ issue positions among different groupsof voters. Specifically, I am writing ask if you would fill out a brief survey regarding thepositions of Al Gore and George W. Bush on a series of policy issues during the 2000presidential election. The survey includes 10 issue-position questions in total (each one askedwith respect to both Gore and Bush), plus one ideology self-assessment question. As you mayrecognize, these questions are taken from the 2000 NES. My goal is to use a panel of “experts”(including yourself) to help estimate, as accurately as I can, where the candidates actually stoodon these issues. I realize that you may have updated some or all of your beliefs regarding Goreand Bush since 2000. All I ask is that, to the greatest extent possible, you attempt to base youranswers on your best recollection of what you believed the candidates’ issue positions to be atthe time of the 2000 election campaign. For each question, please mark an “x” next to theappropriate category.”
