nationwide party boycott announced prior to the election, and whether or not the international
elections observers were invited by the incumbent and observed the election. For countries that
had more than one election in a year (e.g. the legislative election in March and the presidential
election in September) we recorded this as one observation. These trends are shown graphically
in Figure 3 below.
