Abstract:
|
Using aggregate data the paper analyses the trends in women candidates and councillors in English local government between 1973-2002. We note that the growth of women candidates and councillors is very similar. It appears that voters slightly favour women candidates but that women tend to be challengers in the more difficult to win seats. There also appears to be a 'contagion' effect such that when one party is represented by a female candidate then rival parties are more likely also to field women candidates. |
