Language Policy, Identity Politics and Political Theory
Unformatted Document Text:  LANGUAGE POLICY, IDENTITY POLITICS AND POLITICAL THEORY* by Ronald Schmidt, Sr. Department of Political Science California State University, Long Beach ## email not listed ## ABSTRACT: This paper argues that the literature of political theory offers an excellent resource for students of language policy conflict. After describing the characteristic modes of inquiry used by political theorists, the paper notes that political theorists have given little explicit attention to issues of language policy conflict until very recently. Nevertheless, it argues, the literature of this field can be very helpful in discerning what is at stake in political conflicts over language policy. It illustrates this utility by drawing upon the writings of two contemporary political theorists – Bonnie Honig and Will Kymlicka – to explore the stakes of language policy in relation to both “identity politics” and efforts to attain greater “equality of opportunity” for language minorities.
