Even as scholars (Holbrook 1996; Shaw 19XX; Vavreck et al 2002) search for the
effects of conventions, advertisements, or visits on voters, they do not account for the
political content of these treatments. Holbrook has no measure of the content of
convention speeches or events. He assumes that a party’s convention should boost
support for its nominee – and so it does. Similarly, Shaw does not measure the content of
advertisements or visits, he assumes that as advertising and visiting increase in number,
so do the poll standings of sponsoring candidates. If effort is all that is needed to win
elections, one wonders why more candidates have not yet figured this out. There must be
