Abstract
Political action in the form of new social movements protesting
international meetings has gained media and scholarly attention. Research suggests that the media marginalize and de-legitimatize protest activity. This study examines Canadian television news coverage of recent international
meetings held in Canada, specifically APEC, the Summit of the Americas and the G-8 meetings. Each of these events was held on Canadian soil and protest activity was associated with it. The study expected to find that Canadian
television news were just as likely as media in previous studies to focus on the protest rather than the message of activists, and to give less attention to protesters than to the political actors. In contrast, we find that protesters are not
marginalized in national network news. Moreover protesters provide more substantive statements than world leaders attending the events.
