Abstract:
|
John Winthrop tends to get painted in either monochromatically negative or positive terms. Nathaniel Hawthorne, however, presents a very subtle picture of Wintrhop and Puritanism in several of his fictional stories--especially the Scarlet Letter. Recovering Hawthorne's view may do much to secure a more unified and politically inspiring, but still cautious, attitude about America's puritan foundations |
