From the ubiquitous American flag to “United we stand” bumper stickers on cars and
“God bless America” signs in windows, the emblems of American patriotism are
plentiful in the aftermath of September 11, 2001. Patriotism also reasserted itself in
American politics as elected officials at various levels moved to support public
recitations of the “Pledge of Allegiance”, the singing of patriotic songs at public venues,
