On Resisting Politics for Humanity

They began talking. What attracted and held Tamina’s attention was his questions. Not what he asked, but the fact that he asked anything at all. It had been so long since anyone had asked her about anything. It seemed like an eternity! The only person who had ever really interrogated her was her husband, and that was because love is a constant interrogation. In fact I don’t know a better definition of love. (Which means that no one loves us better than the police).
Milan Kundera
What a strange machine man is…. You fill him with bread, wine, fish, radishes, and out of him come sighs, laughter and dreams.
Nikos Kazantzakis
Experience tells us that we must modulate our own laughter, for prolonged fits of it can sometimes restrict breathing until we find ourselves struggling for air. And no one wants to die laughing. But people risk it anyway, for laughter lightens the burden of reality. Laughter offers relief, at least for the moment, by allowing some breathing space, enabling the laughter to step back, to remove him -- or herself temporarily, and to comment without uttering a single word, like a bear signaling displeasure with a growl, merely through the force of its own breath. That laugh holds the hope of political liberation; it suggests that the world does not have to be accepted at face value. Instead, it can be laughed off, turned aside, and kept at bay, transforming hard and fast rules, instantly and miraculously, into something plastic and flexible -- into fluidity.
Barry Sanders
The highest form of the comic arises precisely when the individual comes directly under the infinite abstraction of “pure humanity,” without any of these intermediary qualifications which temper the humour of man's position and strength, its pathos, without any of the concrete particulars of organization that the leveling process destroys.
