Abstract:

Research on the theoretical and empirical relationship between transnational corporations and human rights has been both quantitative and qualitative in nature. While claiming to describe the very same relationship, statistical analysis, country case studies, and corporate case studies sometimes differ in their portrayal of the character of the relationship between TNCs and human rights. However, methodological concepts like the ‘methodology of scientific research programs (Lakatos)’ and the ‘level of analysis’ help bridge the gap between the two. Moreover, three explanatory fruitful theoretical concepts help bridge the gap between the two stands further: the sectoral composition of the investments; the host countries’ level of created assets; and the bargaining power of the host countries vis-à-vis the TNCs all introduces the idea that the benefits of TNC activity are relative and not absolute.
