Copyright by the American Political Science Association 1 It is an unfortunate albeit not entirely coincidental twist of 20th-century Jewish intellectual and political history that Gershom Scholem and Hannah Arendt are remembered as antagonists. This adversarial image defined by their
regard Brit Shalom’s ideological forays and their attempt to develop a new political theory as a bold and imaginative attempt to deal with the fact that Palestine wasn’t “a land without people for a people without a land ” as the slogan had it. In their political experience Kantian moral philosophy met Middle Eastern politics. Kantian philosophy was overshadowed in the short run but in the long run the categories through which Scholem and later Arendt viewed Jewish politics
