Hannah Arendt, Gershom Sholem, and the Founding of Israel
Unformatted Document Text:  22 Palestine at that time. However, such an argument would reduce the Brit Shalom rather uninterestingly to a sum of its influences. Alternatively, then, we could regard Brit Shalom’s ideological forays and their attempt to develop a new political theory as a bold and imaginative attempt to deal with the fact that Palestine wasn’t “a land without people for a people without a land,” as the slogan had it. In their political experience, Kantian moral philosophy met Middle Eastern politics. Kantian philosophy was overshadowed in the short run, but, in the long run, the categories through which Scholem and later Arendt viewed Jewish politics infused Israeli political discourse and self-understanding with a normative dimension that remains as fundamental and controversial today as it was in the pre-State decades. This remains, I believe, the enduring legacy of Brit Shalom, Arendt and the idea of a “non-nationalist” nationalism.
