Abstract:

Using data from Ostrom, Walker and Gardner’s (1994) experimental study of communication in
social dilemmas, we perform a secondary analysis by coding the transcripts of player communication in
the common pool resource experiments. Specifically, we further investigate their finding that communication
produces positive social outcomes. We start with a review of the broader literature concerning
potential explanations in order to develop a 5-category coding scheme encompassing: calculation/
information; rational appeals; normative appeals; solidarity words; and, promises/threats. We also
observe some emergent aspects of group communication, including leadership, dissent, and the willingness
to keep talking. We find that leadership and dissent have significant positive and negative effects,
respectively, and that, of all the discursive categories only solidarity worlds produces a statistically
significant effect; this effect depends, in turn, on players’ willingness to keep talking.
