In this light, the New Deal, and the capacity of progressives within it, appears to
have been far over-estimated in its successful nature and scope. Recognized not as a fulfillment
of American liberalism but as merely a half-step, the history and legacy of the New Deal suggests
that the struggle to get there will be much longer and much more difficult.
