Abstract:

Drawing on democratic peace theory this paper argues that NATO can play an important role in encouraging good neighbourly relations between Russia and Ukraine.

Introduction and overview of the paper Relations between states are affected by many factors. Ten years after the collapse of the USSR relations between Russia and Ukraine continue to be influenced by the process and shape of their mutual transition
to Ukraine have developed the momentum necessary for reform and an agreed roadmap. This has opened up the possibility of a move from partial to consolidated democracy in Ukraine in the future. Increased democratisation in Ukraine will create the necessary environment for good relations between these two states. In order to optimise this success however the larger issue of democratisation taking place within these recipient states has to be addressed. Successful SSR in Russia and Ukraine is conditional on
