Abstract: Recent work on presidential nominations suggests that party insiders heavily influence the pre-nomination process, and effectively stack the deck in favor of one chosen candidate. This paper tests that hypothesis with respect to one class of party loyalists, those donors who give significant amounts of money to the party over time. The preliminary analysis presented here indicates that leading candidates do not receive a greater share of party loyal money than they do non-party loyal money. It also suggests that Republican party loyal donors may converge more quickly and reliably on one candidate than Democratic donors do.
