Abstract:
|
This paper traces the republican thought of Henry Adams through the historical theorizing of his later years. It focuses on his commitment to the university education of the governing elite, the centrality of the study of history to this education, the need for a newly and fully theorized science of history, Adams's failure to produce such a theory in his later works, and the implications of that failure for republicanism. |

| 1 University Education and the Republication Tradition: The Late Republican Politics of Henry Adams My reading of the late career of Henry Adams proceeds from what I would characterize as one reasonably settled reasonably wellgrounded premise: that Henry was theoretically and practically one in a long Adams line of classical republicans. After his comprehensive review of Henry's political and intellectual career James Young has concluded that the civic republican thesis "is the most successful attempt to date to place |

The inevitable isolation and disillusionment of a really strong mind---one that combines force with elevation---is to me the romance and tragedy of statesmanship. The politician who goes to his grave without suspecting his own limitations is not a picturesque figure; he is only an animal. That |
