Abstract:
|
The advent of identity politics has spawned a wide range of responses in political thoery and practice. The thesis of this paper is that identity politics constitutes a fundamental challenge to one of the founding assumptions of liberalism: the abstract universal citizen. The new politics of identity, by bringing identity into the political sphere, reveals the veiled identity of the neutral citizen. It suggests a new politics in which identity is the central focus of politics. |
