Abstract:

My paper focuses on how identities have affected the same-sex marriage debates that have occurred in response to recent ballot initiatives, legislation and court decisions. I proceed as follows. Part I explores how identity politics contributes to the contentiousness of political debate, and how civility can promote more productive deliberation when basic identities are bound up in discussion of an issue. Part II outlines the specific identity issues at stake in debates over same-sex marriage, and describes the emotional reactions that this can produce. Part III explains my analysis of "letters to the editor" as a form of public discourse and communication. Part IV reports my findings about "identity talk", emotions and civility in the debate. Finally, Part V summarizes the lessons about public discussion and civility emerging from my empirical analysis.
